The Experience of Landscape
Published in Hardcover by John Wiley & Sons (01 April, 1996)
Author: Jay Appleton
Average review score:

Interesting application of Dewey's Aesthetics
In the first two chapters Appleton outlines a European history of ideas about aesthetics to answer the question: What is it that we like about landscape and why to do we like it? He then uses John Dewey's Art as Experience (1938) to develop analytical tools to use to propose and investigate hypotheses about why we like particular landscapes.

The approach might be useful in other areas such as architecture when the reason for asking the initial question is for the purpose of producing or locating a work of art.

The Experience of World War I
Published in Paperback by Pan Macmillan (05 October, 1989)
Author: Jay Winter
Average review score:

A Solid book about the Great War
Few books really have as much as this book has. You can read this book and you will know mostly everything about the Great War. There are chapters not just about war on the fronts but also about the civilians, the spies and the U-bouts.

This book does not take sides and in one of the chapters about the Soldiers of the war, it really makes you think. One of the great quotes from this book is: "Some should question not why these men fought but why they stayed" The book talks about the Generals and there foolish plans, the battles and the many, many lost lives.

If you go back even further this war was a continuation of the Fraco-Prussian war and why after the Allies won, Germany paid such a high price. It was to be such a mistake that because of that, people from the Right were able to take control of the country, the Nazis. This book deals with that as well and it's not a dry telling of the war but it has many details. It's not an easy read but if you apply yourself and are interested it you will come out knowing more, almost everything about the Great War.

Great humor for us confirmed geeks
If you are a geek like me, Explosive Cargo will at times make you laugh till milk squirts out your nose. Other times, the author is sentimental, wistful...

Just plain a good read, IMHO.

The Eye Care Sourcebook
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (27 July, 2001)
Author: Jay B. Lavine
Average review score:

The best book on health care I have ever read
This is a book highly relevant to all people having a problem with their vision, even if it's just nearsightedness, and also for all others caring about their eyes and their vision too. The book is excellent in many ways, but what makes it unique, is that the advice comes from a doctor who is an authority in both ophthalmology and nutrition. The nutritional information will be especially helpful to my mother, who is a diabetic. For example, I learned how diabetics can often clear up leakages in their retinas and avoid laser surgery -- something I had not read anywhere else. Learning how to prevent macular degeneration and cataracts will also be very helpful to her. And as for myself, I was thinking about having LASIK done to correct my nearsightedness, but I will not now that I know what problems might result in the future. And since the book is dealing with almost all topics concerning the eye, most people will get an accurate answer to what they are are concerned about. The book is also easy and entertaining to read, and this combined with knowing that Dr. Lavine has your best interests at heart makes this book very special and absolutely worthwhile reading and getting back to over and over again. I just wish we had Dr. Lavine here in Sweden, but having his book is the next best thing!!

Outstanding!
IMHO this stands with the best of Turow, RN Patterson, Martini, W. Friedman, & J. Amiel in courtroom dramas.

Family Faults: Healing the Hurts That Threaten the Home
Published in Paperback by Almond Rod Enterprises (December, 1997)
Author: Jay Wade Marshall
Average review score:

Grace and hope for anyone who has ever been in a family.
Family Faults: Healing the Hurts that Threaten the Home offers practical help to all those involved with families. From Clergy who are struggling to identify the underlying issues in families to whom they offer counsel, to families who are gasping for the fresh breath of God's Spirit, to anyone who has ever laughed and cried over their family ties, Family Faults offers a gentle chisel for chipping away that crusty exterior and discovering the golden essence in ourselves and in our families.

With simplicity and vigor, Marshall likens the controversies within the family to earthshaking fractures in the earth's crust along which movements and shifts occur. Sometimes those controversies result in tremors. Other times the result is a quake. Always there is the possibility of reorienting ourselves and discovering the healing God offers through faith.

Various family faults are discussed based on family relationships illustrated in selected Christian scriptures. Through the use of humor and illustration, Marshall helps the reader discover ways one's faith can provide a buffer for family collisions and often can repair damage to the wounds incurred in family life.

Clergy will find Family Faults useful for a sermon series on family needs and issues. The illustrations will add humor and meaning to any worship tradition. The book is also useful for discussion groups organized around family issues. It is an excellent self-help resource for persons with troubling family issues and for those who are care-givers. It may even save you a few gray hairs and bald spots in childrearing.

I like the book because I find myself on almost every page. Marshall's willingness to share himself encourages the reader to reflect on their own family and offers grace and hope for more meaningful interaction within the context of family. It is one of those books which will occupy space on that special shelf to which I constantly return for nurture and healing.

Family Wealth Counseling : Getting to the Heart of the Matter
Published in Hardcover by Professional Mentoring Program (30 December, 1999)
Author: Jay Link
Average review score:

Excellent for those with net worth > $5Million
Most people of wealth make several false starts with comprehensive income and estate planning. This book describes a method of first determining your life purpose and goals by an extensive interview process. Only then can the technical aspects of planning be addressed.

Well written book by the director of the National Assn of Family Wealth Counselors. If you are a person of means this is a safe starting point to a network of highly qualified and competent FWCs.

The author asks: "If you had to choose between giving one million dollars away to the IRS in estate taxes or giving that same one million to your favorite charity, which would you prefer?" Great question. To fail to plan is to give half or more of your estate away to the IRS.

This book will provide good insight if your net worth is $2-5 Million or you are a financial counselor.
